How were the academic assessments conducted?

The reviews were conducted by expert groups representing different fields, in this case atmosphere, sea ice, and ice sheets. Each team used the initial rapid assessment of climate interventions proposed for the Earth’s cold regions as their starting point, focusing on interventions relevant to its area of expertise. The teams were provided with the Statement of Principles for Assessments and the Guidelines for Academic Assessments to guide their work.

The project management team provided guidance to the assessment teams regarding process but did not influence their evaluations. NOTE: John Moore from the University of Lapland recused himself from discussions relating to the Ice Sheet assessment and did not review the draft report due a perceived conflict of interest arising from his research activities.

In addition to assessing the interventions, the teams were also asked to consider the 12 criteria used in the phase one rapid assessment and determine whether any should be revised or whether additional criteria were needed.

How to submit comments:

Anyone wishing to comment on the draft reports will be required to provide their name and contact information, which will be stored securely and used only for internal verification. Names will be displayed publicly only with consent.

All participants in the Arctic climate intervention assessment process, including assessment team members and those providing comments, are expected to disclose any financial, professional, or personal interests that could influence their judgment or create a perceived conflict of interest. Conflicts will be considered by the project management team to ensure transparency and maintain the integrity of the assessment process.

  3. Submit your comments

Once registered, you can provide comments on any of the draft assessment reports available for review. Using the comment form, please indicate the name of the intervention you are commenting on, as well as the relevant line numbers. Comments should be constructive, relevant, and evidence-based. Provide specific comments and supporting references for the assessment teams to consider, and avoid generic statements.

How comments will be used

Submitted comments will be reviewed by the project management team to ensure they follow standard peer review processes, including being constructive, relevant, and evidence-based. At the end of the review period, a synthesis of the comments received will be shared with the relevant assessment team. Comments containing substantive technical or scientific information may be flagged for expert review to ensure that important input is appropriately considered. Urgent comments — for example, those relating to incorrect or overlooked information supported by credible evidence — will be forwarded immediately to the relevant assessment team for prompt consideration and potential update of the assessment report. All other comments will be addressed in the next round of assessments.

Following review by the management team and relevant assessment team, the synthesis of comments will be published on climateinterventions.org and linked to the appropriate assessment report and intervention descriptions. Accepted comments, along with the corresponding responses or actions taken, will be displayed, allowing users to see which comments have been addressed, are under review, or have been incorporated into updates. Review comments that do not meet these guidelines – for example, those that are off-topic, disrespectful, or unsupported by relevant references – will not be considered.

Each assessment report will include a changelog documenting revisions made following public comments or new evidence, with archived versions remaining accessible for reference. Clear guidance will be provided on expectations regarding clarity, relevance, and evidence citation.
